We have added a link to a poignant interview with Geoff Barsby and filmed scenes of the 1953 floods. An intrinsic part of Canvey Island history, an event that should never be forgotten. The power of nature is ever present. View this by viewing our “the threat” web page.

The purpose of the campaign is to stop the last area of natural Green Belt Canvey Island land, inside the perimeter Roadway, being swallowed up by Developers. Castle Point Council claim they are under pressure by the Government's East of England Authority to build on the Green Belt on Canvey Island. This is absolute rubbish. This is the easy option. The land behind the Dutch Village is owned by Developers whereas the ample Brownfield sites are not. Brownfield site owners apparently do not want to sell. They probably didn't when they were asked but perhaps  they would now. Even the banks are on their knees. Times have changed, re- negotiate. Stop putting Money ahead of Canvey people’s quality of life.

Core Strategy Brochure.
The wonderful colour brochure, supposedly sent to every home in the Borough. Well my team, and I, canvassed the 120 homes on the Dutch Village Estate and there were many complaints from people who didn't receive theirs. OK there will be some that binned them without realising what was inside, but not all. I will be asking if the Council have conducted a telephone poll of the area to find out how many homes did or didn't receive them. Is this deception?. Without the diagram of the plan to show how the Dutch Village Estate Green Belt land is going to be concreted over, we were told of "the land to the east of Canvey Road".

NO, "THE DUTCH VILLAGE ESTATE, GREEN BELT FIELDS" !!!

Now we know what you are up to. So let's be fair, abandon the Core Strategy review with it's ambiguous questions. Let's hold a Referendum. One question, two options for the answer. No, do you agree? Do you agree a little bit? Do you agree a teensy bit? Style of questions which the Planners can manipulate to get the 64,000 dollar answer they would like.

Now  look at our Referendum result on the News page to see what Canvey people really think !!!

The Core Strategy, local development framework warns of the hazards  simply living on Canvey Island presents residents with. This has been encompassed into our argument. To add more numbers to the population is wrong.

We have printed our own window posters and if you contact me through the click here “support” button on this page I will get one to you.

YOUR ISLAND NEEDS YOU!

This is all about finding out what we are made of. We can lay down and roll over or we can make the Island aware. The councillors will listen, and they have an important decision to make, and then the Planners will have to.

Remember they are supposed to be representing and working for us. Tell somebody else about this website, get them to add their support and receive updates.

**** Core Strategy Update ****
January 2011

The closing date for submissions on the additional evidence, requested by the Planning Inspector, in respect of the Castle Point Borough Council’s Core Strategy Document and the long delayed Strategic Flood Risk Assessment has passed. The Examination in Public reconvenes on the 8th March in the Council Chamber. This will allow the Inspector to ascertain whether the Council have answered all of his queries towards allowing him to find the Core Strategy “sound”. This document names the parts of West Canvey Green Belt and the area of the Castle View School as suitable for development. We contend that to develop on these areas would leave the Island with an unacceptable amount of accessible green belt land. The Council continue to point out that the RSPB site compensates for this, however we feel we must be realistic over the intentions spelt out in the TE2100 plan to relocate the sea wall alongside Canvey Way and Canvey Road to allow the Marsh to flood and create habitat within the lifetime of any housing development. For too long the Green Belt on Canvey Island has been disregarded and seen only as a source of never ending land supply for development. We have made full comment on these issues, plus the increased flood risk, due to climate change, as highlighted in the new Flood Risk Assessment and the potential dangers from the two top tier COMAH sites, Calor and OIKOS.
